Waste water in the UK is treated in three main ways:
- Settlement – Waste water is directed into a holding tank, large enough to have sufficient time to either sink or float contaminant from the waste water stream prior to discharge to foul drain.
- Chemical treatment – Required at four key stages to remove contaminants prior to discharge to foul drain, coagulation, precipitation, flocculation and separation.
- Biological treatment – Bacteria or enzymes are used to digest contaminants. The waste water stream is directed into a suitable holding system. The bacteria are then injected and feed off the wastewater contaminants, prior to discharge to foul drain.
